A religious studies teacher who works at a Birmingham school linked to the Trojan Horse controversy has appeared in court charged with possessing extreme pornography.

Nahiem Ajmal, 35, was arrested by officers from West Midlands Police, who later detained four other teaching staff and a youth worker in connection with the inquiry.

Ajmal teaches religious education at Park View, an academy in Alum Rock which is among a number of schools which have been linked to the Trojan Horse investigations.

The tutor, who speaks five languages including Urdu and Arabic, was subsequently charged with possessing extreme pornography, contrary to the Criminal Justice and Immigration Act 2008.

He appeared before city magistrates in February where he pleaded not guilty to the offence. His case was committed to Birmingham Crown Court.

The crown court confirmed that Nahiem Ajmal is due to appear for a plea and case management hearing on June 11.

West Midlands Police’s Public Protection Unit had arrested four other teaching staff and one youth worker in connection with the inquiry over two days in March.

They stressed the investigation was not linked to the Trojan Horse allegations, which claim hardline Muslim extremists were targeting some city schools as part of a takeover plot.

Two of the arrested men work at Golden Hillock School, one at Park View, another is employed as a teacher at Kings Heath Boys College and the fifth is a youth worker.

A West Midlands Police spokesman said: “Four men aged 45, 36, 37 and 32 have all been released and no further action will be taken.

“A 36-year-old man remains on bail until a date in June.”

Birmingham City Council, the Department of Education and Ofsted are investigating the Trojan Horse allegations which are tipped to see a number of schools placed in special measures.
